Why handmade christmas ornaments?
In a nutshell? To bring joy to people who love and appreciate handmade ornaments. Whether the ornament they purchase sparks a happy memory of Christmas Past, a bittersweet recall of a loved one lost, or the realization that it will make the perfect gift for someone on their list, it's so worth it to me personally. I started Ornaments by Dawn in the Atlanta area to provide a Christmas store vibe for my shoppers at craft shows.
When and Why It Began
I was always an industrious kid looking to earn a buck. When, at 16, (I won't confess what year that was!), I was temporarily jobless and laid up from surgery. My pockets were empty and Christmas was fast approaching. So, I used my creativity and the craft supplies on hand to create small felt stocking ornaments as my gift to everyone that year. It was so popular that the tradition of giving my family and friends a handmade ornament at Christmas continues to this day.
How I Got Here
After the Girl Scout Troop I led used handmade Christmas Ornaments as a supplemental way to earn money for a trip (as well as meet a requirement toward their Gold Awards), my daughter, and all those people with their trees full of ornaments I made them over the years, said I should continue what the troop started. The decision was made for me when I was forced to apply for disability. Knowing I could not sit around doing nothing productive or creative with my time (it's that workaholic in me), I finally agreed with them. Handmade By Dawn (renamed Ornaments By Dawn), became a reality in 2007.
